Rough Edge

We are a dedicated group of outdoor professionals who are intent on letting you have the best possible adventure experience. All Rough Edge Members are qualified to lead their relevant activities and all are also qualified First Aiders. We take advice from the best sources including The Royal Geographical Society and the National Mountain Centre Plas y Brenin. In China we also work directly with the support of the British Council.

John Cornley
Founding Member
John is passionate about the outdoors and discovering new, unexpected and exciting places. He recently visited China for a six week reconnaissance trip to lay the groundwork ready for DofE Gold assessments there from June 2010. John’s previous career saw him travel extensively throughout the world, he has a keen interest in languages and culture, is an active environmentalist and a Member of the Royal Geographical Society. Qualifications: ML, REC First Aid, SMBLA Trail Cycle Leader, Level One Paddlesport and Orienteering Coach.

Helen Barnard

Our most qualified member, Helen is Chief Advisor to Rough Edge for all matters relating to Mountain Leading, DofE, Risk Assessments and so much more. Helen holds the following qualifications: MIA IML REC FIRST AID TRAINER FIRST AID – advanced and HSE, WINTER ML, PADDLESPORT COACH LEVEL 2

Cath Wilson

Cath is a qualified teacher and an awesome outdoor instructor with a clutch of qualifications. IML, MIA, Winter ML, REC First

Aid Trainer, Coach Level 2.

Richard Allen
Member
Richard is an ML aspirant who is Rough Edge’s Home Contact Manager. Richard was ground control for the extensive China Recce and has experience leading groups in mountains all over the UK . Richard is First Aid qualified.

Pete Catterral
Member

Pete is one of the UK’s best paddlers and paddling coaches. He has paddled rivers most of us would run a mile from. Head of Paddling at Plas y Brenin, Pete and Rough Edge are working together to conquer a few rivers in China during 2010. Pete is Rough Edge’s paddling expert, providing solid, sound advice on all matters relating to safety and discovery on the water.

Lindsay is our window on the outside world. He is our marketing manager, our voice of reason and our reason not to get too excited sometimes! Lindsay is the inspiration behind the Rough Edge logo and communications.

Jimmy Greenwood

Jimmy is a chief designer for graphics, print and web. He designed the t shirt you will be wearing – say hello!

Peter Walter

Peter is responsible for press and public relations. he is also second in command of our Home Contact operation. Peter’s calm and considered approach make him the perfect choice for media relations and managing crisis situations if and when they arise.

Cindy Wong

Our Hong Kong fixer, Cindy manages all manner of admin and logistics that would be impossible from the UK. Cindy has worked together with John and other team members since 1999.

Bernadette Eccleston
Associate Member
Bern is the back office, the front of house, the side swipe, the middle centre and the goalie. When you ring Rough Edge it is most likely your problem or question will be solved or answered by Bern. A keen outdoors enthusiast, when she’s not at work you’ll find Bern with her husband and children on the coolest UK campsites in their VW camper.
