UK Gold Training/Practice Expedition Week £250 per person
Starting with a discussion of where would be the perfect location (anywhere in the UK) for your group(s) to undertake their Gold practice expedition, we organise the entire trip as a package – making the whole event hassle-free for you. Any group of 6 or above will receive our tailored service, but we are also keen for open candidates to contact us, as there will invariably be the opportunity to join people together and form other teams.
Our qualified instructors will spend the first two days training your groups and preparing them for their practice expedition. On days three, four and five your group will be remotely supervised while they follow their route and complete their journey. A detailed kit list, medical and emergency contact information and consent/booking forms will all be provided well in advance of the trip. We offer each individual detailed feedback following their practice expedition, giving them the best platform to consolidate their skills before they come back for their assessment.

Our qualified instructors will spend the first day overseeing route planning & preparing your group(s) for their assessed expedition. On days two, three, four and five your group will be remotely supervised while they follow their route and complete their journey. A detailed kit list, medical and emergency contact information and consent/booking forms will all be provided well in advance of the trip. In addition we offer to come and visit your group(s) prior to their expedition date, at a location convenient to you, for an informal discussion and to give them helpful hints and advice about the best way to prepare for DofE Gold
UK Courses for Leaders & Teachers
In discussion with many of our friends and colleagues throughout DofE and the outdoor world, we have developed courses specifically to help leaders and teachers involved with DofE work. Each of these courses lasts a weekend and they are designed to be informal, but informative… fun, but not too strenuous and sociable – a chance to meet other people from other parts of the country at the same time as brushing up your own outdoor credentials.
On all our adult courses, if you get your own group together (6+) we will give you a 10% discount on the total weekend cost. Bunkhouse accommodation and basic food are all included. Speciality organic catering is available (quoted separately). Most of our accommodation venues are within walking distance of a local pub.
UK Mountain Navigation Refresher
Boost your navigation skills with our qualified Mountain Leading staff in the mountains of either North or South Wales. This course is idea for you if you have done some map reading and navigation, but want to hone your skills, or if you haven’t read a map for a while and you think you need some guidance and encouragement to get back into it. We also cover route planning and the weather and some of the basic things to think about before you take a group out into the hills of the UK.

UK Elegant Navigation
How to make it all look effortless – we can help. You navigate already and possibly also lead groups, but this course helps you towards the standards expected of a Mountain Leader. Reading land features, weather and group dynamics, detailed route planning, dynamic risk assessments and fallback strategies are all included. You will come away from this course with the tools you need to move your navigation several gears up.

China – DofE Gold Residential & Expedition

Our specific offer of Residential and Expedition Gold Assessments in China 2010 will appeal to those young people who truly have a spirit of adventure to learn about the world beyond the UK. We have a fantastic two week programme taking place in the amazing Yunnan Province and starting in June 2010. Cost on the ground £1350
Residential
During the first week you will get the opportunity to complete your residential assessment, working together with people whom you haven’t yet met and including young people from China of similar age who are in the top tier of the British Council’s International Climate Champion programme. The week will have a climate change focus and will provide you with unparalleled access to many of China’s upland environmental projects. Evenings will be spent learning about Chinese culture, cookery, history and art. This is a full immersion programme and you will come away with a very full basic knowledge of the China of today – and work together with and make some Chinese friends along the way.
Expedition
Week two is the chance to complete your expedition of four days and three nights in the foothills of the amazing Cangshun mountains and the valleys around the Chicken Foot Mountain overlooking the shores of the Erhai Lake. The middle weekend will be devoted to intensive expedition preparation and training and your planned routes will be scrutinsed and approved by one of our Instructors. Once your expedition is underway you will be remotely supervised, so you will need to pass through several checkpoints per day. Yunnan province is one of the world’s most bio diverse regions and you will encounter a fantastic array of wildlife and plants during your trip. You will be provided with official British Council badges and specially prepared phrasebook crib cards to enable you to communicate a little with the people you meet along the way. Add this to your previous week’s residential experience and you will come away with a potentially life changing experience in one of the most spectacular parts of the world.

Rough Edge holds AALA Licence number L8517/R1823 covering Kayaking, Open Canoeing including “sit-on-tops”, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Hill Walking & Mountaineering.
